HUNDREDS of Barclays customers have been locked out of online banking this morning after a glitch on the website.
The bank confirmed the problems after more than a dozen Twitter users reported concerns from around 9.50am.
Data from Down Detector – which tracks outages on major services – indicates that issues started around 9.44am.
At the time of publishing, close to 600 customers were experiencing the outage across cities including London, Cardiff and Birmingham.
Barclays said: “A small number of our customers are having problems logging in to their online banking and making payments on online banking and in the Barclays app.
“We apologise for this and are working to fix it as soon as possible.”
Frustrated customers took to Twitter to vent their frustration, with one writing: “@barclays your online banking is down on pay day. What on earth is going on?”
Another said: “@Barclays been trying unsuccessfully to access online banking all morning. Need to process some urgent payments. What’s going on?”
Kay said: “@Barclays is online banking down? If so some kind of communication and an apology would be appreciated! How long until its fixed?”
David complained to the bank that he had been trying to access his cash online “all morning”, while Gem said that the issue has meant that she “cannot pay staff”.
The bank said it was working to fix the issues, and advised customers to try again if they were having trouble getting into their accounts.
Can I claim compensation for bank outages?
IF you’ve been impacted by a bank outage, your right to some money back is usually based on how much the issue has affected you.
This is because banks don’t have a fixed compensation scheme for service disruption.
If you’re thinking about making a complaint, you’ll need to gather evidence about how you were disrupted.
Try to make a note of when you were unable to access the website or app, plus any costs you incurred as a result.
If your credit rating has been affected by a service outage, because you got a late payment fee after being unable to make a transaction, for example, you should also keep a record of this.
You’ll also want to make note of any bank member you spoke to when trying to resolve the issue.
If you’re unhappy with how the bank dealt with your problem, you can contact the free Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).
Customers can also use the app, contact Barclays through its automated telephone banking services or speak to the bank on the phone.
It advised customers not to try re-do any payments if they have had an error message as the payment might still go through within four hours.
The bank advised customers to wait for four hours until trying again.
The Sun has contacted Barclays for comment.
