When Priyanka Sharma took the reins at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) this summer, it was hard to say whether her timing was auspicious or ominous.

As general manager of the organization that oversees the fast-growing open source movement, she is in an immensely influential position. But with a global pandemic upending everyone’s plans, she knew the foundation’s priorities would need to adapt.

For four months now, she’s been trying to strike a balance between helping the foundation navigate its technical mission and tending to the well-being of its community. What she’s learned so far is that both aspects are essential for an open source movement to thrive.

“Many people are like, ‘Oh, what a terrible time to walk into this job,’” Sharma said. “But I think it’s been really good because I’ve had a chance to step up and help the community go through a challenging period.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A $100 million program to increase internet usage among low-income Alabama families during the pandemic has gone mostly unused, and the state is sending 300,000 more vouchers in a search for additional takers.

Al.com reported that the state is attempting to expand the Alabama Broadband Connectivity for Students program after only 44,000 of 250,000 vouchers mailed in late August were used.

While 75,000 students have gained internet access so far through the program, which seeks to make it easier for students to get online for school, around 450,000 students qualify statewide, said Mike Presley, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The second round of vouchers is being sent by a state contractor to increase participation.

“This second mailing, mailed last week by our contractor CTC Technology and Energy, also includes a resending of letters to households that have not redeemed a

Park Seo Joon just gave us something to look forward to.

In an interview with magazine Metro.Style, the South Korean actor said he wants to meet his Filipino fans once again after the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

“If this situation will be resolved as soon as possible, if there are still people who support me, I hope we can meet up soon,” Park said in the video of his interview.

“I’m also hoping for that and I hope you stay healthy until then,” he added.

Seo Joon recalled the time in 2019 when he was in the Philippines, saying he felt more support in the Philippines compared to when he is in Korea.

“I went to the Philippines for a promotion before. When I am in Korea, I don’t feel the support that much. But when I went there [Philippines], I had an amazing experience,”

Amazon released figures on Thursday that for the first time detail the spread of the coronavirus among its employees. The tech giant revealed that more than 19,000 workers have tested positive or been presumed positive for COVID-19.

The company said it has conducted an analysis of data on 1.3 million front-line employees who worked for Amazon and Whole Foods in the U.S. from March 1 to Sept. 19 and compared rates to the general population during that time. Amazon said that if the rate would have been the same among its employees as it is for the general population, it would have seen 33,952 cases among the workforce. Instead, its figure of

A majority of top startups in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest are seeing little or no impact on their businesses from the pandemic, or even a positive impact.

Most plan to hire more employees this year. And many are optimistic about the regional economy over the next 18 months.

Those are some of the takeaways from the first-ever GeekWire 200 CEO Insights survey. We polled the leaders of companies ranked on the GeekWire 200, our list of the top privately-held tech startups in the Pacific Northwest, and received nearly 50 responses. Topics included everything from the timing of bringing employees back to the physical office to whether a Trump or Biden administration would have a more positive impact on the U.S. tech and business climate.

The results, collected anonymously, provide a unique snapshot of the regional startup ecosystem and broader tech industry. Here are some of the highlights.

More about artificial intelligence

Driving current AI investment has been customer experience and retention, revenue growth, and cost optimization, Gartner found. Those areas of focus are likely to continue as new projects are initiated in the post-pandemic business world, which Gartner said will be rich with AI investment.

Seventy-five percent of respondents said that they plan to continue current AI initiatives or invest in new ones over the

Samsung has launched a UV steriliser box for smartphones and other items at a time when we needed it most. We’ve been using the box for a couple of weeks now, but this story will not be a review, simply because we aren’t medical professionals who can unequivocally say that the box effectively kills germs and viruses. Having said that, using the box did give us peace of mind and we hope it should be there in every home post this pandemic.

Latin America’s e-commerce industry is booming as millions of shoppers across the region venture online during the pandemic, many for the first time, forcing traditional businesses to adapt to survive.

The sector has been one of the big winners of the coronavirus outbreak as fears of infection and lockdown measures keep people at home.

“Covid-19 has been an accelerator of trends, and in electronic commerce it has been very powerful,” said Oscar Silva, an expert in global strategies with the consultancy firm KPMG in Mexico.

“More than 10 million Latin Americans who had never bought online now do so regularly,” he told AFP.

The dominant regional force is not Amazon or eBay but Mercado Libre, which has a similar business model and is present in 18 countries.

Despite the economic turmoil unleashed by the pandemic, the Argentinian company doubled its sales in the second quarter of this year thanks to
