Google on Monday said it’s clarifying its policies for app makers on its Play Store marketplace, telling developers they have up to a year to get in compliance with its policies for in-app purchases.

The system, which allows Google to take a 30% cut of in-app purchases, has been criticized sharply by developers who argue it’s too high a tax for using Google’s mobile platform. Apple, which takes the same cut from developers who use its App Store for iPhones, has also faced intense scrutiny. Some companies, like Spotify and Netflix, have skirted the policy by encouraging people to use the companies’ own billing systems.

The high-profile legal conflict between Fortnite developer Epic Games and Apple continues today, with a federal court hearing that may resolve some of the most pressing questions in the case, including Epic’s request for a preliminary injunction that would put Fortnite back on the App Store.

According to the Wall Street Journal, court observers suggest that this hearing could foretell the likely conclusion of the conflict. The ruling will probably also determine whether or not Apple can block third-party apps such as Epic’s Unreal Engine from its platform, a move that would disadvantage many third-party developers who make games in the engine. If the judge rules in Epic’s favor, one legal expert says, Apple is likely to settle in the next six months; if it goes the other way, the case could continue for years.

The key question in the case is whether or not Apple’s App Store practices–including their

Sept. 28 (UPI) — Apple and Epic Games head to court in California Monday to begin a legal battle that experts say could lead to a landmark decision reshaping the relationships between app stores and developers.

The legal fight stems from Apple’s decision to pull Epic’s popular Fortnite video game from its app store last month after Epic introduced a method for users to bypass Apple’s in-app payment system in favor of its own.

Apple said it was a violation of its app store policy.

Some developers have long complained about Apple’s and Google’s ability to charge developers as much as 30% to use their app stores.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will be asked to force Apple to allow Fortnite back into its store under Epic’s in-house payment option. Rogers could also decide if Apple can block other third-party apps from using Epic’s Unreal Engine development software in

FILE – This Feb. 25, 2020, file photo, shows the icon for TikTok in New York. TikTok asked a judge to block the Trump Administration’s attempt to ban its app, suggesting the Chinese-owned app’s deal with Oracle and Walmart remains unsettled. An app-store ban, delayed once by the government, is set to go into effect Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020.

Lawyers for TikTok pleaded with a U.S. federal judge on Sunday to delay the Trump Administration’s ban of the popular video sharing program from app stores set to take effect at the end of the day, arguing the move would infringe on First Amendment rights and do irreparable harm to the business.

The 90-minute hearing came after President Donald Trump declared this summer that TikTok was a threat to national security and that it either sold its U.S. operations to U.S. companies or the app would be barred

Google has removed this week 17 Android applications from the official Play Store. The 17 apps, spotted by security researchers from Zscaler, were infected with the Joker (aka Bread) malware.

“This spyware is designed to steal SMS messages, contact lists, and device information, along with silently signing up the victim for premium wireless application protocol (WAP) services,” Zscaler security researcher Viral Gandhi said this week.

The 17 malicious apps were uploaded on the Play Store this month and didn’t get a chance to gain a following, having been downloaded more than 120,000 times before being detected.

The names of the 17 apps were:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A judge in Pennsylvania on Saturday rejected a request by three TikTok content creators who asked her to temporarily block a government ban on Apple Inc AAPL.O and Alphabet Inc Google GOOGL.O app stores offering the short-video sharing app for download set to take effect on Sunday.

The content creators argued they would “lose access to tens of thousands of potential viewers and creators every month, an effect amplified by the looming threat to close TikTok altogether.”

U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone wrote that the ban is “undoubtedly an inconvenience” but said in denying the request “they will still be able to create, publish, and share content for their millions of current followers.”
